  1. Welcome students to this lesson and encourage several of the students new to this unit to introduce themselves to each other and the class.
  2. Investigation – Teacher uses Prezi (3.2.1) to explore what galaxies are composed of and introduces research by Edwin Hubble and his tuning fork system for classification of galaxies. Resources
  3. Collaboration – Students are assigned to a pair and are shown a number of different types of galaxies on Padlet and asked to try and classify them using Hubble’s Tuning Fork diagram shown in the Prezi 3.2.1 presentation. Resources

    Movie: Using Padlet

  4. Discussion – Teacher uses Green screen to assist with identifying the characteristics of the spiral galaxies.
  5. Investigation – Teacher uses Activity (3.2.1) Prezi to explore with students the concept of Dark matter and its influence on galaxy structure. Students provided with some group assignment working time as lesson permits. Resources
  6. Collaboration – Students explore Activities (3.2.2) - PhD Comics – True tales dark matter video (6:04mins) and attempt Question Sheet Activity (3.2.3). Resources
  7. Reflection – Students can also attempt the Activity (3.2.5) Matching Galaxies task if time permits. Resources
