Lesson 2 – How do properties change at the nano scale?
In these lessons students will be able to:
- Understand the term “Bulk” properties of matter.
- Understand that the surface area to volume increases dramatically as we divide matter into smaller parts.
- The notions of the “Nano Scale” and the differences between the study of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
- Materials can behave very differently if we divide them into tiny particles.

Review the students understanding of the key points in lesson 1.
Investigation – Students investigate what is meant by the bulk properties of matter. View PowerPoint 2.2 - Bulk Properties.pptx Resources
Investigation – Students investigate how the bulk properties can change as the surface area to volume ratio increases. View PowerPoint 2.3 - Bulk to Nano Properties.pptx Resources
Reflection – Students investigate individual atom placement after introduction of YouTube IBM - A boy and his atom: World’s smallest movie. Resources
Discussion – Students discuss the effects of surface to volume ratio on bulk properties of matter. View YouTube – Deconstructing the Nano Cube. Resources
Students revisit the key idea of the effects of surface area to volume ratio as discussed in the video at 2:35mins. Resources
