Lesson 4.2 – Dye-Sensitises Solar Cells

  1. Welcome students and briefly review the key ideas about the construction and operation of solar cells from the previous lesson using key questions.
  2. Discussion – Revise the key principles in operation of traditional photovoltaic solar cells through the use of the YouTube Clip – How Photovoltaic Cells work and L4.2 Solar Cells.pptx. Resources
  3. Investigation – Teacher introduces the 2nd Hand data analysis task. Students are provided with an explanatory task sheet L4.2.1 which describes how to write a journal article intended to inform the reader about the operation of dye-sensitised solar cells. Resources
  4. Teachers take questions allowing students to clarify the 2nd hand data task.
  5. Investigation – Teachers then use the green screen to load an example of a well-constructed research article and highlight the effective elements which enhance communication. Use an example of an outstanding research article developed by students in previous units.
  6. Students are then directed to work on the 2nd hand data task for the remainder of the session.
  7. Teachers monitor student progress and answer questions.
