Lesson 5.1 – Designing a house supported by Nanotechnology A
In this lesson students will:
- Consider implications of what is meant by a Nano-house (a living space that is aided in several ways by Nanotechnologies).
- Be introduced to the major assessment for the course (design a Nano-house, ppt, prezi, website etc. due during lesson 8.1).
- Applications of Nanotechnology will change how we live our lives in the future.
- Nanotechnology will become ubiquitous in the products we buy and their labour saving design features.

Welcome students and briefly review student progress with the 2nd hand data task.
Investigation – Brainstorm activity where students are prompted to identify Nanotechnology products that are now widely used in and around the house.
Collaboration – Using breakout groups students are asked to consider how the use of Nanotechnologies can be used to better deal with the challenges of a growing global population and the issues this is likely to produce. Students engage in a think pair share activity and then finally share ideas using their microphones and through the chat feed.
Investigation – Students explore the concept of a Nano-house, as a living space that can be aided in numerous ways by Nanotechnologies to assist with design, maintenance and general labour saving features. See - A day made of glass. Resources
Discussion – Invite students to respond to aspects of the clip that they find interesting or challenging. Q - How likely is this scenario for the majority of developed countries and the world’s growing population in general?
Teachers introduce the unit’s major assessment task to students – The design of a Nano-house. This task is due for presentation during lesson 8.1. It must include several (at least 4) different uses for Nanotechnologies in different areas of the house. Some relevant Nanotechnologies were covered in lessons 2.1, 3.1 and 4.1 and students are welcome to discuss these, but it is outlined that they are expected to research beyond the unit content so far to find new technologies to add to their assignment. Discussion – Discuss the different areas of the house that could be improved using technologies discussed so far. What would benefit from hydrophobic coatings? Discuss benefits to function and to form (design).
Reflection – Which areas of current housing design are already benefitting from the availability of Nano products?
